They were living happy lives until the Titans invaded, his house had been destroyed by the kick on of the titans had did. He and Hana escaped only for Hana to get grabbed by a Titan, he tried to get her free but she told him to let go or he would die as well. He did as she told him and then she was killed, he wanted revenge on the titan that killed his little sister.
